MIGHTY MUNSTER!

MIGHTY MUNSTER!

HEINEKEN EUROPEAN CUP WINNERS 2006

In seventy eight the All Blacks met their fate

Against Munster in famed Thomond Park.

In two thousand and six it was mighty Biarritz

Who were beaten and forced to embark.

……………

By boat and by plane, in storm and in rain,

Our supporters set out for the game

With banners held high and red flags in the sky,

From all parts of the county they came.

…………………..

They were there from Rathkeale, and from sweet Abbeyfeale.

And from Glantine and Tour to a man.

They came from Athea and Mountcollins that day.

While some drove from Grogeen in a van!

…………………

Refusing to fail, they searched for the Grail,

And in Cardiff they faced their last test.

The third in row, very soon they would know

If they were to succeed in the quest.

………………….

Up went a great shout as Munster ran out

Led by lion-hearted Foley so rare.

The Millennium Dome is a long way from home,

But the noise could be heard in The Square.

………………………

Biarritz kicked it long, and Munster knocked-on.

Then Bobo raced in for a try.

O’Gara replied with a kick from the side

As the fans serenade Athenry.

……………………….

In the thick of the fray, O’Connell held sway;

This son of Young Munster so proud.

In ruck and in maul, he recycled the ball,

Amidst thunderous applause from the crowd.

…………………….

Then Stringer cut loose, without any excuse.

From a scrum on the blind side he tore,

And using his head, he left them for dead,

As he dived o’er the line for a score!

…………………

A titanic bout with the issue in doubt,

There was no place to run or to hide.

Crash tackles went in, and amid all the din

We saw spirit and passion and pride.

………………………………..

And then it was done, and Munster had won!

Three cheers for Biarritz – how they tried.

We could finally sup from the Heineken Cup,

While grown men just stood there and cried.

………………………..

So let’s drink to The Few, those brave men and true.

Let us now carve their memory in stone.

While rugby is played, their names will not fade.

We regard them as one of our own.

…………………..

Here’s to Horgan and Payne, who played through the rain.

Halstead and Kelly stood tall.

With Dowling and Hayes, well set in their ways,

And O’Callaghan contesting each ball.

…………………….

O’Gara kicked true, and young Stringer too

Took man-of-the-match on the day.

Skipper Foley played well, and the truth now to tell,

O’Connell and Leamy led the way.

…………………….

Wallace came back and rejoined the attack.

And Horan he propped to a tee.

Jerry Flannery’s Bar will be known near and far,

And the pint just went up by 10p!

……………….

The subs did their part; Pucciariello didn’t start.

O’Driscoll played out of his skin.

Fogarty, Manning, O’Leary, they never grew weary.

Quinlan, Henderson, were set to come in.

………………

Let us raise a last glass and drink to the class

That won us the Heineken Cup.

But be of good cheer. We will be back next year,

And if it’s played in Croke Park – we’ll go up!

MUNSTER ABU!
