FROSTY NEW YEAR!

Raymond | Category: Local News Sport | 0 Comments

Bad weather with frost and snow has played havoc with sport and travel in the area over the past week. Many minor roads are virtually impassable and even major roads are dangerous in patches, despite the best efforts of the county council to lay down grit and sand.
Schools were due to re-open tomorrow but most have opted to remain closed until Monday at the earliest.
Frozen pipes have caused water shortages in many households, and a bulk tanker has been parked in The Square to provide water to those who need it.
All local sporting fixtures have fallen victim to the weather, although the coursing meeting succeeded in avoiding the worst of the frost and went ahead as planned last week. (N.B. We have some pics from the coursing in our PHOTO section courtesy of Dick Fitzgibbon. Click on PHOTOS above and go to Latest Photos and scroll down to the end.)
The cold spell is set to last for another week at least, and is believed to be the most severe since the winter of 1962 when it snowed heavily on St Stephen’s Night and the freeze lasted well into March.
Global warming is perhaps not such a new phenomenon after all!
