COURSING WELL ATTENDED

Christmas passed off peacefully in the locality. The weather was mild and people were able to go about their business with a minimum of fuss.

The wrenboys were out on St Stephen’s Day, but their numbers seem to be in decline in recent years. St Ita’s Wrenboys, however, continue to go from strength to strength and a big batch travelled through town and countryside collecting for their various charities. A documentary on St Ita’s Wrenboys was broadcast on West Limerick 102 fm on St Stephen’s morning and it will be repeated again on New Year’s Eve.

A group of intrepid golfers headed off for Newcastlewest Golf Club early on St Stephen’s Day and had, by all accounts, a most enjoyable day with some record scores being returned. (if there was a Booker Prize for fiction, these lads’ score cards would surely win)

The local coursing meeting was also well attended on Sunday and Monday with large crowds arriving from many parts of the country and from overseas. The coursing was of a high standard and some keenly contested buckles were witnessed. The coursing social goes ahead at the GAA Clubhouse on Saturday 10th January.

Local public houses were also well populated during the festive season. Many provided music for their patrons as well as the obligatory “christmas drink”.

Maura Hickey from Collins’ Park will be a contestant on Winning Streak on RTE next Saturday night at 8.15. We wish here the best of luck.

And finally, may we wish everyone, at home and away, a Happy and Peaceful New Year. Normal service will be resumed at Abbeyfeale On Line next week.
