THE Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Éamon Ó Cuív, visited the town on Thursday afternoon and unveiled a plaque at the old railway station to officially open the Abbeyfeale to Barnagh rail-trail.

Fr Leo McDonnell blessed the proceedings and there were addresses from Liam O’Mahony, Chairman of Great Southern Trail, and by Shay Riordan of West Limerick Resources.

Minister Ó Cuív complimented the Great Southern Trail committee on the vast amount of work that had been completed over the past sixteen years, and he said that he looked forward to further developments along the line from Rathkeale all the way to Tralee.

The company then adjourned to the Railway bar where Minister Ó Cuív met with local dignitaries and also chatted to the public at large.

Many still regret the demise of the railway, but are happy that the line is now being put to good use as a public amenity for walkers and cyclists.
