Fr Casey’s added the county minor football title to their senior success with a 2-12 to 1-5 win over Kilmallock on Saturday. Martin Scannell became one of just a handful of players to win senior and minor county medals in the same season.

(More to follow…..)

Fr Casey’s romped to the 2006 Limerick minor football title following an impressive display against hapless Kilmallock in Dromcollogher last Saturday evening.

The opposition started as firm favourites to win this tie, with some away bookmakers offering odds of 6/4 against a Fealeside victory. However, the young men in blue and white were determined to follow the example set by their senior colleagues the previous Sunday and bring another county title to the banks of the Feale.

Billy Quirke opened the scoring with a point in the first minute, before the industrious Owen McEnery set up Donagh Kelly who banged in a fine goal two minutes later.

The Fealesiders led by 1-6 to 0-2 at half time, and when Billy Quirke rattled the back of the net following a flowing Abbeyfeale move out of defence, early in the second period, the game seemed virtually over. Kilmallock rallied briefly and managed to raise a green flag themselves. However, a string of points from James Riordan (0-2) Sean Flavin, John Riordan and Martin Scannell finally put the issue beyond doubt and was the signal to torch the bonfires in Mountmahon for the second time in the space of a week!

Abbeyfeale captain, Martin Scannell, accepted the county trophy from Sean McAuliffe, secretary of the Limerick Football Board. Martin now joins that small but elite band of players who have won both senior and minor championship medals in the same season. Man of the Match was John Riordan, but in fairness they were all brilliant on the day, and they received a fantastic reception when they arrived back in Abbeyfeale later that evening.

The team was expertly trained by former Abbeyfeale and Limerick goalkeeper, Toddy McMahon, and we must also give a mention to the selectors, PJ “Bumper” Woulfe, Gerard O’Connor and Brendan Walsh who all gave sterling service aduring the season.

Congratulations and well done to everyone concerned with this marvellous win!
