TRAFFIC CHAOS CONTINUES!
| Category: Local News Sport | 0 Comments
Traffic chaos in the town continues to exercise the minds of our local politicians, and a delegation of county councillors across the political divide have requested an urgent meeting with Transport Minister, Martin Cullen, to discuss this ongoing problem. Holdups and traffic jams are becoming the norm every evening between 4.pm and 6pm and local businesses in the town centre are losing out because people tend to avoid the area during these busy times. The new Headley’s Bridge by-pass has greatly freed up traffic travelling to tourist resorts in Kerry. However, bottlenecks in Newcastlewest, Abbeyfeale and Castleisland have nullified any benefits gained from this new road. Many people travelling from Limerick to Kerry are now taking the coast road and by-passing much of West Limerick. As a result of this the tourist trade in the area is being affected with many hotels and b & b’s reporting reduced bookings this summer. The knock-on effect from all of this could prove very serious for the economic stability of the area. Necessary roadworks presently being carried out just below Barnagh are also adding to the delays.
KERRY FANS
A large convoy of Kerry fans passed through the town early on Sunday morning on the way to Croke Park for the All Ireland semi-final game against Cork. They also made their customary stop on the way back to visit their favourite taverns, and the town was bedecked with green and gold jerseys and flags on Sunday night. The odd sprinkling of red Cork jerseys was also in evidence as both sets of supporters mingled amicably to discuss the match.
RACES
Tico, owned by local butcher Toddy McMahon, and trained by his sister Anna and daughter Rachel was a very good winner of the Guinness Golden Mile race at the recent Dingle Races. Tico was returned at the generous odds of 12/1 and reports suggest that a nice “touch” was had by connections. Watch out for this one again!
WALKS
A number of walks have been organized by the Southern Trail Group to coincide with Heritage Week. One of these will start from Abbeyfeale on Sunday 3rd September and continue along the bed of the old railway line through Devon Road and Tullig Wood, finishing up at Halla Inse Ban. All are welcome.
GAA
Fr Casey’s slumped to a 6 point defeat at the hands of Ballylanders in the county senior football championship on Sunday evening, and hopes of progressing further in the competition are now slim.
